Johanna Tagada - Tamil Diary

Saturday August 31st - Saturday September 28th 2019

On invitation of and curated by Yuki Owada, Totodo presents Tamil Diary, a solo exhibition of artworks by French born artist Johanna Tagada. Unfolding itself as a journey, the exhibition presents a selection of artworks in the multiplicity of mediums composing Tagada’s artistic practice. The pieces on view have been created during Tagada’s extensive stays in Tamil Nadu, South India in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Tamil Diary unravels with photographs and a short film from the evocative cycle Necklaces of Flowers (2017 - present), one documenting collective and cultural relationships of women residing in Tamil Nadu with flora. In retrospect and in the continuity of the work of Trinh T Minh Ha, Tagada does not intend to speak about or for, but near by these women and their continuously evolving traditions.
The language of flowers forms in itself an integral part of South India’s rich culture. For centuries, flowers have played an important role in the quotidian of local women, be it for religious, spiritual, medicinal, culinary, social or commercial purposes. Each bloom, including jasmine, rose, marigold, hibiscus and violet is sold in the street, and worn in simple yet intricate hairstyles for its personal quality and symbolic, among which love, happiness, prosperity and luck.

The matter of plant and the vegetal also finds themselves in To End is to Start, a series of works composed of fibres and water. In Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968 also known for its diverse architecture, the artist deepened her knowledge and practice of hand papermaking. Embedded in her interest for the Deep Ecology movement, inclination towards sustainable and cruelty free living, these pieces have been composed by making use of leftovers of textiles from local factories, and are for most of organic sources. This is not without recalling the artist’s large textile installation pieces.
Textiles and oil paintings on papers created on the occasion of the artist most recent stay are presented along these two bodies of works. This first exhibition at Totodo mirrors Johanna Tagada’s inquisitiveness towards daily life, a theme central to her practice and projects.

Tamil Diary is equally a celebration of Tagada’ second book titled Do Insects Play? published by Chose Commune, as the exhibition present itself as an occasion to view and acquire selected works on papers including in the publication.
